Silver for Mission:Explore! “The judges would encourage all geography teachers to look at this website and get their students to go exploring.”

April 23, 2012

Thank you very much to The Geographical Association for our Silver Award at their annual awards. Given to the Mission:Explore website by The Geography Collective and The Workshop, this is what the awarding body had to say about the site:

The judges liked Mission:Explore’s highly original and creative approach to learning outside the classroom. The website is free for students to log in and take on innovative tasks (missions), gaining points and badges for completing their missions. Some missions are place-specific but most can be done anywhere; they all challenge users to get out and about to find places, make or do things which help them get to know the world better. They encourage risk-taking but teach sensible strategies for assessing and coping with risk.

The website is fun and attractive from the outset, encouraging engagement with the tasks. It is interactive and easy to use, with child-friendly language and icons. It is suitable for primary and lower secondary students. The practical, open-ended tasks are wide-ranging and promote enquiry and reflection; some challenge perceptions and thinking. They are appropriate for all ages and abilities.

For teachers, the site is a rich source of ideas and approaches to fieldwork and enquiry, and will prompt you to think again about how to use your local environment. The missions could inspire activities for homework, a geography club or off-timetable days.

The judges would encourage all geography teachers to look at this website and get their students to go exploring.
