Why I like… Sound play

December 3, 2010

Most of us have a personal music player of some kind, may it be an phone or just a regular MP3 player. Music and maybe talk podcasts are used on these all the time, but if you’ve not do so already… try playing atmospheric sounds of one place in another. Walking through the urban jungle listening to the jungles of Papua New Guinea.. or in a more subtle and spooky way listening to one city while in another is a a thought provoking, confusing and sensory challenge. It’s not only fun, but can encourage new thinking about places as well as forcing you to discover links and parallels between them. A great place to find sounds you can use is The Free Sound Project.

One of my favourite missions on Mission:Explore is Sound play:

“Go for a walk where there are lots of sounds and record the noises around you. Do the same walk again whilst listening to the recording you made. How does it feel?”

If you have got an iPhone (and our free app) this mission is really easy to do. Try it and let us know how it goes.

Or try listening to the soundtrack to a scary film. I did this with the soundtrack to Psycho in the Barcelona underground….pretty disconcerting/

Very cool. Try the music to 28 Days Later while walking around central London too! The music to Sunshine on the tube is cool too…
