Help us to build a national map of playable places

September 17, 2010

We need your vote to create a national map of playable places!

Help us build a map of Playable Places in the UK (and beyond)

For the last few weeks we have been involved in a new project from Orange called Mobile Volunteering. It’s all about using your mobile phone to volunteer and this is how they describe it:

“Next time you’re waiting at a bus stop, imagine what help people in the queue could give in less than five minutes of their time. They could be photo-tagging wildlife, mapping green urban spaces, making an audio map for the blind or filling in a research survey.

We want your ideas on how people with a mobile phone anywhere could volunteer time for good…”

The potential for this project is massive. As part of our work with Love Outdoor Play and Mission:Explore we want to use the Orange Mobile Volunteering to crowd create a national map of playable places in the UK (and beyond). A playable place is somewhere that is suitable for (young) people to play, but does not have to be a playground.

In practice this will mean volunteers going to or seeing a playable place, photographing it, tagging its location and commenting on it. If possible we would love to see a survey built into this so that we can generate some seriously useful data too. For example, we could flag the places which are in need of development or improvement under the endangered Playbuilder scheme in the UK.

Please help us to get our Mission:Explore Places to Play Map app developed by voting for it now on the Mobile Volunteering website here:

If you would like to also support our Mission:Explore app you can vote for this too here:

If we do not win with the community vote we can still be selected by the judges. If you represent an organisation and would like to see this map built and to have access to the data please email daniel@thegeographycollective.co.uk to have your name added to the bid.

Top 5 Love Outdoor Play actions to take now!

1. Community fund Love Outdoor Play stickers to put up in your community

2. Ask businesses and individuals to invest in campaign stickers. We will add them to everyone’s delivery!

3. Ask your local newspaper to print the Love Outdoor Play symbol along with a story

4. Become a Love Outdoor Play ambassador for your country or region.

5. Go outside and play!
