Playborhood

May 26, 2010

Playborhood signPlay Tower Hamlets have just put us onto Playborhood in the United States. They are doing some seriously awesome work on getting kids more freedom to play freely. Check out their insightful blog, read Mike’s manifesto and check out the cool Playborhood sign, something that would be great to see in streets here in the UK.

I personally really like this reflection on where ‘home’ extends to, where we limit our children to and why. We are lucky enough to live on a street where our 6-year-old can roam easily and cross the road safely as it is a dead end. He can also go into the overgrown depths of our back alley. His limits are definitely set by the main road, but for many parents it is people who are feared. This is where I think these signs are a great idea.. to show that their is a community of support for free play. A community which is willing to help and look out for each other. Something we need more for sure.

Thank you so much for the kind words about Playborhood, Daniel! I totally support your advocacy of children’s roaming. It’s the key to their achieving autonomy, and ultimately, to increasing their quality of life.
